Assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties
SpLenDiD is one of very few institutes in Ghana where children can be assessed for Specific Learning Difficulties. Assessment is the most important step in providing help. It forms the basis for all other interventions, for example Individualized Education Plans or remedial teaching.
The overall purpose of assessing individuals is to ascertain whether the said individual is failing and the degree of failure when compared to those of the same age and educational attainment. If the individual is behind expected levels, there is the need to establish whether this is due to an overall low ability, physical factors like hearing or visual impairment, repeated absence due to illness, emotional or social factors, frequent changes of school, or whether the individual has a Specific Learning Difficulty.
There are initial/screening and comprehensive assessments conducted by our organization.
1. Initial Tests
We conduct initial tests to determine to determine whether the pupil is ‘at risk’ or to give an in-depth assessment of perceptual strengths and weaknesses. The screening tests are designed to help us identify pupils who might need a more thorough test for possible presence of learning difficulties. We use the Ann Arbor Learning Inventory.
2. Comprehensive Tests
A comprehensive test is conducted, if, after a screening test the individual is found to be ‘at risk’ of a specific learning difficulty. We conducts tests which will bring to the fore the root cause(s) of any learning difficulty. These tests generally examine which brain functions are interfering with the individual’s acquisition of normal school learning.
Tests of intelligence, reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, sequencing, liberality and mathematics among others are conducted. The results from these tests are assembled into a detailed report which brings out the strengths and weaknesses as a result of which an Individualized Educational Plan could be developed.
The Wide Range Achievement Test and the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales are used .
Appointments can be made through 050- 8328076 or the contact form on this website.
